"I have learnt that HIV or AIDS does not condemn you to death...I feel that I should pass this learning onto others who think that living with HIV or AIDS is just counting down the days to die", says Amelia. Photo: Joel Chiziane/OxfamAUS

"Mum's illness would have worsened if it was not for the caregiver and the family's situation would have been terrible. I feel supported and I am happy with the visits mum gets from the carer", says Jenovania, Amelia's daughter. Photo: Joel Chiziane/OxfamAUS
Give people like Amelia hope for a future
While we tighten our belts and prepare to spend less, the implications of a financial crisis look grave for people living with HIV like Amelia.
The reality is that without your continued support Oxfam’s partner organisations will receive less money for their life-saving work.
The devastating effects of HIV in Africa
- There are currently around 22 million people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa
- The AIDS and HIV epidemic reduces already drastically diminished life expectancy rates by another 20 years
- Many people living with HIV battle loneliness, isolation and stigmatisation in their communities
Why home-based care is crucial
The stigma attached to HIV means people are often left alone to fend for themselves.
Home-based care:
- Educates the family and community about the virus reducing prejudice
- Provides life-saving medication
- Feeds, clothes and cares for the person living with HIV giving them dignity and hope
- Provides emotional support and hope
- Helps keep families functional by enabling children to continue their education
- Empowers communities to work toward self-sufficiency
Vital work like home-based care is threatened by cuts in aid, meaning thousands of people living with HIV will be likely left to die without increased community support.
