When disaster strikes around the world, Oxfam and our partners move quickly to provide life-saving assistance to people in need. Once the immediate danger has passed, we work to rebuild lives and reduce the risk of future disasters.

Cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe

The people of Zimbabwe are facing a cholera epiedemic. Our response will help 615,000 and we plan to start moving into areas where cholera has not hit, to proactively prevent the spread of the disease.

Flooding in India

Oxfam is responding to one of the worst flood disasters in Bihar, India, which has affected more than 2.7 million people. At least 100,000 people remain stranded, and more than 250,000 homes have been washed away.

On 12 May 2008, a devastating earthquake hit Sichuan province in China. Three months on, Oxfam continues to support thousands of people in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces affected by the disaster.

Myanmar (Burma) cyclone

An estimated 2.4 million people were affected by Cyclone Nargis which hit Myanmar in the early hours of 3 May. Over the past three months, Oxfam has provided support to more than 250,000 people.

Timor-Leste: After the violence

While the violence in Timor-Leste has subsided, the humanitarian crisis remains. Oxfam is providing humanitarian assistance in camps in Dili and supporting local partners in surrounding districts.

Solomon Islands tsunami

An earthquake struck north-west of Honiara on Monday 2 April 2007 sparking a tsunami which affected Western Province communities. We distributed shelter repair kits and tents, built latrines, restored water supplies and ran health promotion activities.

Papua New Guinea cyclone

Cyclone Guba hit the coast of eastern Papua New Guinea in November 2007. We distributed health and hygiene materials, tarpaulins, water containers and other essential items, and supported local authorities in their emergency effort.

Bangladesh cyclone

On 15 November 2007 cyclone Sidr struck the southern coast of Bangladesh leaving about 4,000 people dead with 8.5 million people affected.

Earthquake tsunami in Asia

2004 Indian Ocean tsunami

A remarkable amount has been achieved in tsunami-hit countries since enormous waves smashed their way across the Indian Ocean on 26 December 2004. The millions of dollars donated by Australians and others around the world has made – and continues to make – a huge difference to the lives of affected communities.

Emergencies, whether manmade or natural, occur anywhere in the world, at any time. As a humanitarian advocate, we seek to ensure that the systems and laws designed to protect people in times of conflict.
